McAllister Park SA

I was just down in San Antonio this past weekend and rode Mcallister Park. I was very disapointed, it seemed like the entire trail was very flat with just some twists and turns, no climbs and no big downhills. Is that just how it is, or did I miss out on some great area that I just didn't find?

For the most part that is how it is. There are, however, some sections that although not long, offer some quick climbs or quick descents. Much of the "good stuff" isn't on the beaten path, so to speak. After-all, the city shows about a 6 mile loop on their map...those who have rode Mac on a regular basis can get about 20 miles in with minimal duplication.

I'm new to mountain biking and have been riding for just over two months now, mostly at McAlester Park. I'm still learning my way around the park and have been doing the 'blue outer loop' whenever I ride during the week.

I've found a few trails that go in and out of creek beds that can be a lot of fun. There's a few areas that have some long uphill grades that can be pretty strenuous and then comes a fast downhill descent with some fun curves.

O.P. Schnabel and Government Canyon have areas that are proven to be more geared toward testing a rider's technical ability but McAlester still has a lot of fun places to ride if you give yourself a chance to know the park's trails. I live on the northeast side of San Antonio and ride out there about 5 days a week. On weekends I like to ride elsewhere to get some variety in.

I think McAllister Park is a great park to introduce someone to Mt Biking.
